Although little more than a provincial town thirty years ago, Shenzhen has become one of the world’s megacities with over 15 million inhabitants. The brief was to create a new coastal city on a 520 hectare site. As a rational response to the Pearl River Delta’s hydrodynamics and the character of the landscape, an island form was selected as the basic urban idea. The city grid is orientated to maximise the site’s natural assets in particular the hills and the offshore islands which give this part of the Delta its special character.
